Bay Parkway is an express BMT West End Line elevated station. The stop would be an express station and has two island platforms for the three-track line. It is the terminuses of what were originally dubbed 'West End Short Turns' in the early days of the BMT and was the terminus of rush-hour M trains when there venture into South Brooklyn were changed over from the Brighton Line originally because of construction in 1987 until June 2010, when they were discontinued because of budget cuts.
It would make sense if M trains were able to be relayed and changed direction on the middle track, unfortunately the switches don't dictate this. There are only switches beyond the station, south of the station. So these trains relayed in the center track between here and 25 Street, with terminating trains blocking through D train service while they were fumigated of passengers. Trains would also run via the middle track (see 25 Street for photos) after switching beyond the station to the Coney Island Yard two stops away at the beginning and ends of the rush hour. All four ends of the platforms have small ancillary buildings, including a signal tower at the Coney Island-bound end of the Manhattan-bound platform.
The stop has a single entrance at the middle of the platform where two staircases lead down from each platform to a station house beneath the tracks. Here are the turnstiles. Staircases lead down to each of the four corners of Bay Parkway and 86 Street.
The platforms have canopies in their middle sections. The older Akzidenz-Grotesk Bay Pkwy signs were left intact and not replaced. In the middle of the platform there are old wooden benches and green windscreens that surround portions of them.
The exterior of the elevated where 86 Street crosses Bay Parkway was given the important street treatment of concrete with mosaic coding covering on the elevated structure. Unfortunately billboards directed at Bay Parkway drivers distract from this Arts and Crafts era detailing.
In 2012 the station was renovated and made ADA accessible. ADA accessibility is achieved through 3 elevators: a street elevator up from the NW corner of 86 Street and Bay Parkway and platform elevators between the two staircases up to each platform inside the station house.
