20 Avenue is a standard BMT West End Line elevated station. The stop is a local stop with two side platforms for the three tracks including the middle track that is occasionally used for diversions although it has never seen regular revenue service. The platforms (because of extensions) are offset from each other with the Manhattan-bound platform running about a car length north of the Coney Island-bound platform.
The stop has a single entrance at the middle of the platform where two staircases lead down from each platform to a station house beneath the tracks, here are the turnstiles and waiting area are and staircases down to each of the corners of 20 Avenue and 86 Street.
The platforms have canopies in their middle sections with corrugated cream style windscreens that cover the entire length of both platforms. The station was renovated (along with the rest of the West End Line) under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, and today has cream-colored windscreens with green trim under the platform canopy but a tall mesh fence opening up some views of the surrounding neighborhood on the exposed portions of the platforms.
