Pennsauken Transit Center opened as an infill station on the RiverLINE on October 14, 2013, with an infill station opening on the Atlantic City Line that same day, connecting the two New Jersey Transit Rail Lines in South Jersey, and allowing continuous rail service (albeit with two transfers) between stops on the Atlantic City Line and the rest of the New Jersey Transit Rail network on trains owned and ticketed by New Jersey Transit.
The station cost $39.747 million, nearly all paid for by the Obama-era Recovery Act. It is the only significantly federally funded asset of the RiverLINE since the state's Transportation Trust Fund was used to the pay for the rest of the lines entire $476 million 2004 numbers opening day construction costs. The line wasn't constructed using Federal Funds because planners knew wouldn’t have met cost-benefit thresholds required for Federal aid. The station wasn't originally construction because of the expense of building the Atlantic City Line station since these train tracks cross-over the RiverLINE track's on a high bridge, as they approach the Delair Bridge to cross the Delaware River into Pennsylvania.
The RiverLINE platform consists of a single side platform along the single RiverLINE track. This platform runs from just south of the grade-crossing with Derousse Avenue before ending basically under the Atlantic City Line tracks above the station. The RiverLINE platform contains a single red shelter in the same style as the other RiverLINE stations. Decorative ceramic tiles line the columns holding up the canopy is part of the same River Rail Revival Art installation that is located at the rest of the RiverLINE stations, artwork here is of animals including birds butterflies and crabs.
This platform contains two short walkways and a longer ramp at the southern end of the platform. These all lead down to the western side of the transit center's 268 parking spaces. The entrance to the Atlantic City Line platforms is along the southern side of this parking lot, near the southern entrance to the platform. The station's bays are just beneath the Atlantic City Line embankment with ADA parking spaces closest to the RiverLINE platform. All parking at the station is free.
