Penn-North is an underground station, with the normal island platform in a concrete-lined box. To leave the platform, two separate escalators and a staircase lead up to a lower mezzanine just above the platform. These lead up to a central bank of three escalators, a staircase, along with the platform elevator in between (that has no landing at the lower mezzanine) up to an upper mezzanine area. Immediately at this upper mezzanine area are the station's faregates.
To reach street level two separate sets of stairs and escalators lead up to brick and glass entrance areas at street level. These are located at the Northeast and Southwest Corners of the slightly diagonal intersection of North Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue. The NE corner also contains the station's street elevator down to the mezzanine in its own separate silver entrance structure.
