Ferndale is the one intermediate stop on the mainline (today;s Glen Burnie branch) south of where BWI Branch trains split off on a two-stop extension that opened on May 20, 1993.
The station contains a rare island platform for the two track line (with ADA block ramps at each end of the platform). This platform begins at the grade-crossing of Ferndale Road and runs north. The station feels like it's almost median running with Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd just west of the station and Broadview Blvd just to the east with some trees and grass separating these streets from the station platform. There are also mid platform and northern end of platform grade-crossings that leads across the Southbound track and just to fairly low-traffic Broadview Blvd with no painted crosswalks over other station amenities.
For amenities the station has a single canopy structure with blue support pillars holding up a white canopy in the middle of the platform. Next to this are two TVMs under a glass canopy structure. A few planters also line the platform.
There is finally a little brick and cream-colored pillar by the main platform entrance from Ferndale Road with a small clock on top of it. It contains signs that say “Ferndale, Maryland: Named in 1921 — Formerly Wellham and Railroads have long been a part of Ferndale's history. The WB&A Railroad steamed through the neighborhood 1888 to 1950, carrying as many as 1,750,000 passengers a year. With the historic spike pulling ceremony on February 18, 1992, Ferndale proudly welcomed a new era in transportation — Light Rail.”
