Theater District/S 9th was the northern terminus of the Tacoma Link Light Rail, from the streetcar lines opening on August 22, 2003 until until the stop was closed on August 1, 2022 in order to allow the new Hilltop Extension to be fed into the rest of the line. Old City Hall is the replacement station two blocks north of this station at 7th Street.
The station had a single side platform on the east side of Commerce Street, a short distance north of 9th Street. The platform had some art elements of what resembled spotlights that encorperated the preforming arts since was station is in the Theater District. Just south of the station the line originally diverged into two tracks for street running down Commerce Street.
