Winthrop Street is a stop on the two track IRT Nostrand Avenue Subway, the station has two side platforms, with no crossover, so no free change of direction transfer. Each of these still has its original 1920s Dual-Contracts era tiling with Winthrop St. name tablets on a blue background with a green and brown boarder. The station's trim line is similar: a lighter brown for the main solid sections with a boarder composed also of brown tiles. There is an intermediate line of green between these two boarders. At the ends of each platform, where they were extended, 1950s style tiles have been added that have Winthrop Street spelled in white on a blue background at regular intervals along these tiles. Both platforms, as well as the mezzanine area also have green I-beam columns along them.
The station's exits from each platform are somehow a block apart from each other. On the Manhattan-bound platform there is a bank of turnstiles directly along the platform, these lead to a small fare control area where the token booth and some MVMs are and a single street staircase out to the SE corner of Winthrop Street and Nostrand Avenue.
The exit from the Flatbush Avenue-bound platform is a block south of here. A single street stair at the SW corner of Parkside Avenue and Nostrand Avenue leads down to a small fully automated control area. There are two High Exit Turnstiles for passengers leaving the subway system and a single High Entrance/Exit Turnstile for passengers trying to get on Flatbush-bound trains. This small fare control area is about half a story above the Flatbush-bound platform. Two short flights of stairs lead up from the platform to it. There is some evidence in the form of exit mosaics saying To Winthrop St on the Flatbush-bound platform that at some point in time this direction had an exit to Winthrop Street in addition to Prospect Avenue, although the only evidence of this being built is a slighlty wider area of the platform under Winthrop Street that is fenced off.

Looking out the front window of the front car of the redbird train at Winthrop Street, there not usually so many people taking pictures of a subway train, particularly at this sleepy, underground central Brooklyn stop.
