Jackson Avenue
Jackson Avenue is a local stop on the White Plains Road Line that was renovated in the mid-2000s. The stop opened on November 26, 1904 making it one of the oldest IRT elevated lines still in service (used only by the second Avenue el until 1905 when the IRT Broadway Express Line was extended to the Bronx).
This makes the elevated much lower to the street than those built under the dual-contracts starting ten years later. This means that the station house and fare control are separate for each of the two side platforms with no free crossover or under as it typical for most three track elevated lines. Street signs warn trucks of low clearances beneath the el.
Only the portions of the platforms near the station houses are canopied and windscreened with the ends left to be exposed to the elements with historic looking and repainted low fencing along the platforms that still have their ornamentation. The platforms are slightly staggered with the exits even more so. Both are towards the front of their respective platforms.
The stop isn't located near any traditional intersections. To the northwest of the station is the St Marys Park Houses (a housing project) so no streets get through at the station. To the south is Jackson Avenue ending in a T-intersection, to the east is East 152 Street that subway elvated and Westchester Avenue curve away from just west (railway south) of the station before passing the former junction with the Tremont Street cutoff from the 2/3 Avenue combined elevateds and entering the tunnel portal before the next station.
For access, on the Manhattan-bound platform there are two staircases. Each coming off from either side of the station house between one of the pathways into the St Mary Park Houses just railway north (east really) of Jackson Avenue's T-intersection. These lead up and into separate entrances on either side of the small station house where turnstiles lead out to the platform.
There are also High Exit Only Turnstiles for passengers leaving the station directly at the staircases allowing them to bypass entry into the station house. The station house has lots of translucent windows out to the street and the outside's decorative features have been restored.
On the Dyre Avenue/Wakefield-241 Street-bound platform, two separate street stairs lead up to a shared landing on the same side of the station house from the NE corner of Westchester Avenue and Jackson Avenue which almost reaches E. 152 Street in an odd, angled intersection. There is a high exit only turnstile that allows exiting passengers to skip entry into the station house. To enter the system passengers must enter the station house and use one of two High Entrance Turnstiles (there is also a high exit only one). There is a tiny area beyond fare control to wait for trains inside before the four doors out to the platform.
