116 Street is a local stop on the Lexington Avenue Line in an area where the local tracks are above the express tracks meaning that from the side platforms of the station the express tracks are not visible, but their rumble beneath can be heard. Each platforms layout is simple with no free crossover or under, just fare control areas with turnstiles (and the uptown side now unstaffed) directly in the middle on each platform. From the Downtown platform streetstairs (one to each side) lead to the NW and SW corners, Uptown platform to the NE and SE corners of Lexington Avenue and 116 Street.
The platforms near their mid-sections where the exits are, are wider than at their ends. They are slightly offset from each other with the Downtown platform running about a half-car length farther north than the Uptown platform, which runs a half-car length farther south. The stop was renovated in 2004 with the green name tablets and the trimline with 116s in it restored, along with artwork along the platforms that look almost like splotches of graffiti.
