Elburn is the terminus of the Union Pacific West Line. The station opened as the end of an 8.5 mile extension on January 23, 2006. The station has a single side platform on the southern track of the 3 track main line. The station functions having just one platform because the large Elburn yard with 10 siding train storage tracks (each storage track is long enough to store multiple trains) is just east of the station. Trains which turn in the Elburn Station and return to Chicago stop at an employee stop in the middle of the yard before entering the passenger stations.
Towards the eastern end of the platform is a small brick structure that has a canopy that covers about one train car. This structure contains a small enclosed waiting area with benches and some vending machines. The doors have an unique E logo etched into them.
The platform is above the station's 600 space parking lot on a grassy berm. Three staircases: one at the eastern end of the platform, one in the shelter structure, and one towards the western end, along with a ramp that begins at the eastern end of the platform structure connect the parking lot with the platform. Access to the station (via the parking lot) is from both directions. To the west Kansas Street leads to 3rd Street and the small town center of Elburn. From the eastern end of the parking lot Railroad Avenue leads to the entrance to the Metra Yard and Anderson Road which crosses over the railroad yard on a bridge.
