Irving Park is a station in the median of the Kennedy Expressway (I-90 & I-94) that is elevated and opened on February 1, 1970 as the blue line was extended north from Logan Square to Jefferson Park. Metra's Irving Park Station on the Union Pacific Northwest Line is parallel and just southwest of the CTA station. The station consist of a single relatively narrow island platform with a full length bubble-roofed canopy supported by white pillars in the middle of the platform. Complicated exits are located at each end of the platform. At the northern end of the platform a staircase and narrow escalator lead down to the main fare control area with normal turnstiles, this is on the south side of Irving Park Road. A walkway with just fences continues north to a high exit turnstiles and a staircase down to the north side of Irving Park Road. The southern end of the platform has two more exits. First an escalator and staircase lead down to a smaller station house (but a fully enclosed building) at street level with only farecard only high entrance/exit turnstiles this exit is to the west side of Pulaski Road. This was clearly staffed at least part time when the station opened. A walkway continues way beyond the end of where trains actually stop on the platform with just low fences, finally to a high exit turnstile that leads to a staircase down to the east side of Pulaski Road.
