Convention Center was the southern terminus of the VTA Downtown Extension that opened on June 17, 1988. It acted as a terminus for just over two years until the line in the middle of the Guadalupe Parkway first only to Tamien on August 17, 1990. The station became a transfer stop between the light rail's two southern branches with the opening of the first segment of the Winchester Line on August 1, 2005 and the rest of the line on October 1, 2005.
The station consists of a single island platform on the line in the middle of San Carlos Street. The station is midblock between Market Street and Almaden Street. The platform has one legal entrance (although the other end has a white pillar sign and just subtle don't cross here signs) at its eastern end. The platform has a long canopy framework structure that surrounds the entire platform with most of it having a semi-translucent roof. The canopy structure is colorful with orange beams holding up a framework and crossbeams that are off-white. There are small sighs with simple Convention Center text with orange boarders and more white text on orange for on platform signage, including the direction of the one legal exit.
