8th Street (National City) is an original San Diego Trolley Station and has the standard two street level platforms that begin at the northern end of the 8th Street grade crossing. The platforms are also connected by a concrete central area between the platforms. The San Diego-bound platform has just two small red canopy structures while the San Ysidro-bound platform has the brown pavilion-type canopy structure on the edge of the station's 123 space park and ride lot (buses just have a stop along 8th Street).
From January 20, 2014 through September 2014, the station was completely rebuilt under the trolley renewal project to have 6 inch high platforms replacing the former ones at ground-level. The new station has the standard renewed Blue Line station layout, with modern 6 inch high platforms. The track area is now normal ballast with 4 pedestrian crossings, 2 at each end of the platform that are step free, and two in the middle of the platform. Two larger cream-colored canopy structures on each platform provide more shade than the previous canopies. The parking lot was also redesigned with a proper transit center in the parking lot. There are now 6 bus bays, with buses stopping directly along the San Ysidro-bound platform. Photos 1-20 taken on 20 March, 2011; 21: 28 December, 2019
