Broadway is a local stop on the BMT Astoria Line with two side platforms for the three-tracked line, the Manhattan-bound platform is fully windscreened, while the Astoria-bound platform is only in its midsection where both platforms have canopies, leaving the extremities to just have a low-lying fence offering its nice views. In the middle of the platform there are two staircases from each platform that lead down to a station house and fare control area beneath the tracks. Here each platform has its own small bank of turnstiles with the token in between and a free crossunder by walking through a narrow passageway to one side of the station house. To get to street level two passageways leave this area to two staircases down to each side of 31 Street giving the station street stairs at all four corners of that intersection with Broadway.
The station was closed from July 2, 2018 through January 24, 2019 for a renovation under the Enhanced Station (Cuomo’s Sexy Stations) initiative, both platforms received new largely glass (with some areas of black panels) windscreens under the platform canopies. The ends of the platforms became mesh walls. New modern-looking black panels now line both platform mezzanines, the entrances kept their attached subway circular globes, with illuminated signs saying Broadway station above each entrance staircase. The fare control area was re-arranged to have one central bank of turnstiles serving both platforms, in a more conventional way.
Finally on the Astoria-bound platform, towards its southern end a new staircase was built directly off the platform down to the east side of 31 Street south of Broadway this staircase has a sign that says Exit Broadway (like its an open exit), but above a set of 3 gates that say "Unauthorized use prohibited" so its unclear (although passengers use it all the time) if its intended to be another exit. At street level there is a simple (and typical) sign for an Exit Only Staircase that says "No Entry: Use Entrance at Broadway & 31 St."
