55 Street is a standard BMT West End Line elevated station. The stop is a local stop with two side platforms for the three tracks including the middle track that is occasionally used for diversions although it has never seen regular revenue service. The station platforms are canopied and windscreened in their mid sections but left to be exposed to the elements at their ends, although the windscreens continue a bit farther on the Manhattan-bound platform. From December 2010 through 2011 the old corrugated looking ones were replaced with modern green and tan ones.
It is in the middle of the platforms where two staircases lead down to the station's only exit, a decent sized red station house nestled beneath the tracks where 3 doors lead to it from each platform to form a single shared bottom landing for the two staircases. It has a bench and the turnstiles and token booth, some of the windows are of the little square pieces of opaque glass design that means the stop received some renovations in the late 1980s-early 1990s. Exits via streetstairs from this station house are a bit confusing, since the stop is above a six-way intersection as New Utrecht Avenue cuts through the street grid. There are two streetstairs down to the NE and SE corners of 55 Street and New Utrecht and an additional one down to the SW corner which is at a trianglular intersection with the staircase along 13 Avenue.
