Race is a light rail station on the northern section of the Winchester Branch that is single tracked; the southern section is for the Hamilton Station. The two single-track sections are both in areas of where significant bridge infrastructure was required. In the case of Race the line crosses I-280 and a number on- ramps. The ROW here that is shared with a UP freight track also appears to be too narrow to accommodate a third track. The stop is the first stop on the core of the Winchester Branch that opened on October 1, 2005. The lines opening was delayed for two months because of arguments with the FRA over horn blowing and quiet zones. Service was only extended to San Jose Diridon, the stop before on August 1, 2005. This date was projected as the opening date of the entire corridor.

The station consists of a single platform that is sort of an island between the freight track and light rail track. The platform has black fence along the freight track. The platform begins at the grade crossing of Race Street that it crosses at an odd angle and then immediately crosses Parkmoor Avenue. The other end of the platform has a pedestrian grade crossing to a through back alley that seems to lack a name (that goes from Parkmoor Avenue to Lincoln Avenue) on the southeast side of the tracks. The other side has a direct entrance to a plaza of in front of a transit-oriented development. The platform has a single cream-colored canopy structure for waiting passengers.
