Fruitdale is a light rail station located along the Union Pacific ROW with a single island platform for the two-track line. This platform begins at the grade-crossing (at an angle) of Fruitdale Avenue and extends south. The line becomes a single track just north of the station and this single-track section includes the Race Station that has just a single track. The light rail tracks are on the western side of the freight track. The island platform has a single cream-colored shelter that includes two sets of wind-screened benches. Decorative metal panels by artist Diana Pumpelly Bates designed to evoke the rising and setting sun cover the windscreens. The platform has an additional entrance at the southern end with a pedestrian grade-crossing leading across the northbound and UP freight track to the Southwest Expressway that is directly parallel to this side of the rail ROW.
