Well the subway closed in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy for just the second time in history after Hurricane Irene last year that the subway’s have been fully closed. It still isn’t raining yet close to midnight.
I did go downtown today to meet some friends on the upper east side, heading downtown to 59th Street around noon there were no signs about the subway shut-down in seven hours. I only noticed this sign that I first noticed posted on Friday:
Coming home we walked across Central Park and were kicked out at 4:30pm (not transit related but I had to include it), although the park was supposed to be closed until 5pm:
I then found this bus stop that had fallen over on Central Park West, without any wind yet (Hopefully there won’t be too many more in the storm):
At 125th Street coming home around 4:30 there was this not in service train of R32s:
When the A train finally came we ran express the one stop to 145th Street, I didn’t see any trains being stored on the extra tracks at 135th Street. At 145th Street we took to the local track to 168th Street, holding a C train across the platform from us at 145th Street. I assume we ran local because their storing trains on the lower level express tracks between 145th and 168th Streets. Getting off to go home and hunker down at 181 Street there were finally signs about the transit shutdown about an hour and a half away:
Stay tuned for more of my Hurricane Sandy closed entrances in Washington Heights! I also plan to upload some more (albeit presently closed stations as I hunker down at home) train stations from my massive archive.
I also just noticed this amusing service status on the MTA’s website (the West Hempstead branch no longer operates on weekends anymore and always says service change every weekend, it just reverted to Good Service with everything suspended):
