I pride myself for this website on not visiting stations by car, I find it takes some of the fun out of it, since I enjoy trying to coordinate train and bus schedules and taking long walks in random places along random train lines. I might has well discuss my outing today: I went on an all day walk today getting 9 stations of New Jersey Transit’s single tracked Pascack Valley Line. The day was very simple: I took the 171 Bus about 7 miles down Route 4 and got off right near the New Bridge Landing Station, and started walking, photographing a bunch of 19th Century depots that have been left undisturbed because the branch has never been expanded from a single track like so many others that often modifies depots and platform locations. I hadn’t planned to walk 10 miles but I kept pushing myself to keep going (I almost stopped at mile 8, New Bridge landing) and got all the way to Montvale. I’m a little sore this evening, wont be going on any long walks tomorrow, but know I’ll be fine by Wednesday.
This small out of nowhere update I’ve been meaning to make for awhile and was one that took little energy to do and was the opposite of today. Just before Thanksgiving I was driving up to Vermont to visit relatives (outside of Windsor, VT and in Cornish on the New Hampshire side) and pick up my brother for break who goes to college in Putney. The first stop happened because I was driving up I-91 and getting restless, realizing it was time to stretch my legs. I saw a sign for the Windsor, CT Amtrak Station from the highway and decided I might as well go for a walk there. The other two stops were made because I was running early, they weren’t far out of my way and I have faced the reality that those remote stations with just daily Amtrak service are only ever going to get photographed with the help of a motorcar (there about a dozen more on the site that were also taken on road trips), unless I start criss-crossing the country on my bicycle. Here the three Vermonter Amtrak Stations (well one only the Springfield Shuttle, bypassed by the Vermonter), I hope to get the rest of the Vermonter as far north as Windsor, VT when I drive up there again in March to drop my brother off:
- Windsor, CT–(23 photos)
- Bellows Falls, VT–(21 photos)
- Claremont Jct, NH–(26 photos)
Enjoy!

Haha, doesn’t it always happen like that? The next station is only a mile away, let me walk. The next one is only 1.5 miles, I’ll walk and that’ll be the last one. The next one is only another mile… Definitively done that before.
