Today was the last day of my weekly Unlimited Ride MetroCard and I think I got most of my monies worth from it. Here is the rest of my week in recap.
Thursday: Was a day of me forgetting my camera so I got practically nothing done. It began on the 1 train to 207 Street where I took an unbelievably crowded Bx12SBS bus to Pelham Bay Park and made it one stop to Buhre Avenue where my camera died. I then had a bit of time to kill (but not enough to warrant sitting in Starbucks to wait for my camera to charge) and got off at 96 Street, and walked over to witness the 2nd avenue subway construction. Then I was on the M15 SBS down to 57 Street before wending my way back to the west side. Total Swipes: 6
Friday: I finally did my station-to-station of the 6 train in the Bronx, taking the M98 down to 125 Street, doing a photo essay of the street-level portion of the Metro-North Station, and then every stop. Total Swipes: 13
Saturday: Did a few photo essays of 86 Street-Broadway, 59 Street-Columbus Circle, 77 Street, and 68 Street-Lexington, before attending the Yankee game in Manhattan in the morning. These stops seemed too crowded to do during the week. Total Swipes: 6
Sunday: Never ended up riding the subway, went for a long bike ride.
Monday: Today was one of those long LIRR station-to-station days. It consisted of first going out to Kew Gardens for a photo essay (website claims the waiting room closes at 10am, turns out 1pm for real), walking to Forest Hills for one, taking the E to the 7 and out to Main Street-Flushing where I did photo essays of EVERY station on the Port Washington Branch, doing TONs of walking (had no idea how hilly that portion of Long Island is), s well as two rides on the Q12 and N20/21 respectively. Total Swipes: 8
Today (Tuesday): Went on a little trip to finish off the local stations on the 1 train. (Christopher, Canal, and Franklin), along with some other traveling. Total Swipes: 7.
Total Swipes for the week on my 7 day unlimited: 49! (each ride cost 59ยข)

Did you really walk the Port Washington Branch east of Great Neck? That’s a LOT!!!
Most of it. I took the N20/N21 from Great Neck to Plandome Road. Walking down Port Washing Blvd after Plandome station I hoped the N23 would come but it didn’t. It was quite a lot of quite hilly walking. Made me want my bike
Now that you’re in NY, I would do as many Nassau County stations as possible before Long Island Bus gets privatized on 1/1/12, as once that happens, you may not be able to use MetroCard.
The Far Rockaway Branch and northern half of the Long Beach is pretty walkable.
Babylon Branch, Carle Place, Westbury, Hicksville have pretty frequent bus service on weekdays/Saturdays (half hourly or better) Or you can walk, as the Babylon Branch isn’t that spaced out in Nassau. Carle Place and Westbury are very close together too. Westbury and Hicksville is way too far to walk.
Half-hourly weekday bus service is available for the Oyster Bay as far as to Glen Street, Glen Cove is walkable from there. So is Locust Valley (a bit long, though at 2.5 miles)
All of the harder to get to Nassau stations you got already (Island Park, Oyster Bay)
Suffolk will be very HARD without a train pass. Buses are available, but they are infrequent and there is no pass. ($1.50 cash a ride)
I’m planning to do that before the end of the year. Nassau County is the goal (it will remain the status-quo until then).
