Today was an interesting day in terms of how many random places I turned up on the subway. The day started with me and mother to go to the Whitney Museum of Art deciding to walk across the Washington Bridge and to 170 Street on the 4 train. This walk made me realize that I really need to get off at all of the Bronx IRT stations they have some amazing artwork often in station houses. That’s the plan for tomorrow! We took the 4 down to 86 Street walked up to the upper level platform and saw a local train coming in and decided to hop on it down to 77 Street where we saw a passenger doing something very bizzare, bumping a large CRT tube television down the street stair and into the station, he had a hand cart that he was using for flat sections. After an moderately interesting visit to the Whitney to see a Hopper Exhibition. After leaving the museum my mother promised to take me shopping for a new camera lens I was promised for Christmas, so we went to look at B and H photo, by walking down Madison Avenue to 53 Street the entrance from there to the 5 Avenue station I was surprised to find closed since it is a Sunday. So few subway entrances are closed now during off hours (ten years ago before the days of High Turnstiles when every entrance had to have a token clerk on duty to be open, most secondary entrances were open for entry (they always had the High Exit Turnstiles) only part time, not 24 hours a day like today). I guess they don’t want to leave that escalator entrance unstaffed or something. So we walked over to 5 Avenue and got on the E there to 34 Street. At B and H I decided on a 18-200mm Image stabilized lens, I currently shoot everything on a 18-55mm IS lens, I do have a 75-300mm lens but its a piece of junk and I barely use and don’t really bring it on my trips. I’d much prefer having just one lens with the additional zoom hence wanting the 18-200mm-The switching lenses routein I find a pain and one more thing to remember on trips-that we didn’t buy, I need to now figure out the brand.
After leaving B and H I parted ways with my mother and had an indecisive time getting some more midtown photo essays. I walked over the Herald Square and decided to continue down to 28 Street and Broadway. I took the train down to 8th Street where I left and walked over to Astor Place to do a photo essay of the downtown platform and took it one stop to Bleecker Street, a station that’s a mess where I left the downside side crossed over to the soon to be half-closed (and replaced with a platform farther south to build a free transfer) uptown platform before leaving fare control again without taking a train and walked down to Broadway-Lafayette and finished a photo essay there (the stations aren’t programmed as one on a unlimited). I almost hopped on the train but decided to walk back to 8th Avenue and walked down to Spring Street a stop I realized I had done a photo essay of previously when I got there. Than it was the C to 59 Street to the A and back to my parents house.
Total Swipes: 8 (No photo uploads, didn’t photograph any near complete station pages)
