Armitage is the most southern station on the Northside Main Line that has four tracks. Only Purple Line Expresses and Brown Line trains stop in the station on two side platforms with red line trains bypassing it on the middle two express tracks. Right beyond the southern end of the platforms the middle two express tracks for Red Line trains dip below and enter the State Street Subway that carries them through downtown. To enter the station there is a small original 1900s brown station house with ornamental detailing along the northside of Armitage Avenue (between Sheffield Avenue and Bissell Street) beneath the Loop-bound tracks. Here entering passengers go through the doors to the turnstiles that are along what was a removed brick wall of the station house. It leads to a wide mesh area beneath the tracks (with high exit turnstiles directly out to the street to avoid the unnecessary doors of the station house). There is an elevator followed by a staircase up to each of the platforms at almost there northern ends. Here for about two cars are the original canopies with brown fencing that extends a bit farther along the platforms. The extensions have more modern silver fencing but the platforms are entirely made of wood. There is a high exit only turnstile in the middle of each platform. These lead down to staircases down to a small plaza (with red brick planters) and the southside of Armitage Avenue. This was used as a temporary entrance from July 23, 2007 to June 5, 2008 while the main entrance was being rebuilt under the Brown Line Capacity Expansion Project.
