Rio Vista opened on November 23, 1997 and is a trolley station serving more new development including shops and luxury apartments. The station has the standard two side platforms each with two oversized bus shelters typical of this branch these painted brown with some benches beneath. Access to the station is mainly from the western end of northern Old Town-bound platform where an iconic clock tower entrance marks the entrance to the surrounding transit oriented development. At the eastern end of the platforms a staircase leads down from the Santee-bound platform while a ramp switchbacks
its way down from the Old Town-bound platform to Qualcomm Way.
