The historic area of the SP Station in Merced, located closer to downtown with more services around, is currently home to the Merced Transportation Center with city buses, Greyhound, YARTS (that also serves the Amtrak station, one mile away) and the California visitors center. The historic 1900 built station is the former home of parks and community services that left the building on August 9, 2011 so it is now vacant. This is a single story brick building with a small area painted white beneath a roof, Southern Pacific Lines is painted into this area. This historic building is connected by a covered walkway to the 1990 built Merced Transportation Center built in the same style as the historic building. One wing of this building is part of a California Welcome Center mostly designed for visitors to Merced and Yosemite. There is also a line of ticket windows home to Greyhound and The Bus, local Merced bus lines. These are all beneath a mural that includes a steam engine. Outside of the modern transportation center are a line of bus bays alongside the single train track that crosses through town. This bus lane follows the track the entire distance from M Street to O Street. The two depots are in the middle of this super block (with N street ended) bounded by 16th Street on the opposite side and surrounded by parking lots. On the O and 16 Street corner is a shelter with the same brown roof as the two station buildings. This is where a hub and main transfer point for The Bus services are.
