There are two different rail-based Transit Lines in Utah:
- TRAX is a 35 mile long light rail line with two branches and 41 stations that connects Downtown Salt Lake City with Sandy to the south, and the University. The intial operating segment from Downtown to Sandy opened in 1999. Most of the northern portion of the line and the University Branch run down the median of the wide Salt Lake City Streets, while the southern branch to Sandy is on a private ROW. In 2011 the South Jordan and West Valley City Extensions were opened. The TRAX has incredibly four different types of rolling stock: the standard of Light Rails opening in the 1990s SD-100s and SD-160s, Urban Transit Development Corportation high floor Light Rail Vehicles that were built in 1987 for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority Light Rail but were sold to UTA in 2003, when that system decided to replace their LRVs with low-floor models, the high floor LRVs are now only operated on the blue line during weekdays (with the ex-VTA light rail cars sitting in storage) with the new lines using new low-floor Siemens S70s not built with the required wheelchair high-platforms to use the older high-floor LRVs
- FrontRunner (North) is a 44-mile long Commuter Rail Line that connects Salt Lake City with Ogden to the north and five stops inbetween with frequent hourly, or half-hourly during rush hours commuter rail service, along dedicated tracks that are parrell to Union Pacific's Line. In addition two trains each rush hour are extended along the UP's tracks to Pleasant View. This train system uses both Bombardier BiLevels and Ex-New Jersey Transit Comet I's. Motive Power is provided by MPXpress MP36PH-3C Locmotives. The standard train consist consists of a Bombardier BiLevel Cab Car, a Bombardier BiLevel Coach, a Comet I, and the Locomotive. The locomotive always pulls the train north, while the train is pushed south.
- System Expansion: FrontRunner South will extend FrontRunner to Provo 45 miles with 6 stations on the opening operating segment, it will be similar to FrontRunner North on its own private ROW to one side of the UP tracks. An opening date of December 10, 2012 has been annouced. An addtional six mile long Airport TRAX line will add six stops to TRAX connecting the Salt Lake City Airport with downtown is under construction. This is addition to the Draper TRAX line in the planning stages that should open by 2015 as well.
- Amtrak: Amtrak's operations in Utah Consist of the California Zephyr crossing thruogh the state in each direction between San Francsico and Chicago through the night making just four stops including Salt Lake City
