Here is the short strip map waiting to leave Chambers Street:

It was the usual 8 car R160 Train Set:

Then I headed down to the F train, this Weekend Manhattan-bound F trains were running express. I road it trough Bergen Lower Level which looks totally abandoned especially with the lack of tiles, there are a few exit signs:

I’ve actually made 3 trips to Smith-9th Street since it reopened to photograph the great job the MTA did with the station. On my first trip I was in Downtown Brooklyn and made a point of taking a slow B57 bus from Downtown Brooklyn to Smith 9th Streets, the reasons were two-fold I thought the best way to experience the renovation would be by entering at street level and also for the practical reason, I lacked an Unlimited Ride MetroCard in my wallet and didn’t want to pay twice. The MTA did a great job with the renovation, for this special station I have decided to put the renovated stop on its own section:

For a number of weekends in February and March trackwork on the Lenox Avenue Line and the refurbishment of 149 Street-Grand Concourse made the 2 train operate in two sections:
A Northern Section operated between 3 Avenue-149 Street and Wakefield-241 Street
For the first 4 weekends the southern section terminated at 96 Street and reversed on the Middle Track at 103 Street. More importantly without a connection to the East 180 Street Yard R62s and R62As made rare appearences on the 2 train.
The final weekend saw 2 trains rerouted to Lenox Terminal although I didn’t find any R62/R62As

The hardest stops to upload have been those in my very backyard on the A train in the heights, and here they are. Two are unique stops with elevators or ramps (your choice) to reach the platforms. These stops being my home stations have a range of photos from my ten years taking pictures on the subway system (181 Street has my first), I also realized how many incadescent lights 190 Street had back in 2003. They also show the subway in unusual circumstances such as closed during the Transit Strike, Tropical Storm Irene and Superstorm Sandy:

Yes, Smith-9th Street reopened today and I do plan to visit it soon but felt no reason to trundle down to Brooklyn today since I already go down there twice a week (I was there yesterday) so that updated photo essay will have to wait for next week. Instead I spent quite a lot of time today finally rebuilding every station in the Rockaways (including the southernmost 3 that are closed) to finally add the H train to my website, I also included some photos I took two years ago on a trip to witness the rebuilding process. I’ve been out to the Rockaways three times to photograph the H and the subway there after Sandy, the first trip saw the R32s that ran for a month before they were replaced by R46s that I photographed on my previous two visits. I’ve also added Artwork pages for some of the stations, others I need to revisit, again for adequate artwork coverage (or their closed).

I am bad at keeping up with current NYC Transit events even if I’ve visited them. This update is all encompassing with all the photos I took of the South Ferry Stations and closure and reopening situation:

Rector Street–(33 Photos) right after Superstorm Sandy the South Ferry-bound platform became an exit platform and the MTA removed all fare control equipment since the High Entrance Turnstiles couldn’t handle the crowds now exiting the station. In early March (before the South Ferry Loop reopening had been announced) I revisited the station and found turnstiles (lacking MetroCard readers and bars) installed at all the entrances. Finally I walked by the entrances after South Ferry has reopened and noticed all three now all boarding (the middle one was exit only before the storm.

South Ferry Loop-(44 Photos, plus 3 of the artwork) the loop station I visited on opening day last week, they did a great job cleaning the tiles, the terra-cotta reliefs look great. The main entrance to the platform is now tucked away with the turnstiles leading directly to the open air inside the ferry building. The new staircase to the R train and new south ferry mezzanine is a neat passageway.

New South Ferry Station–(48 Photos) although the new platform (2009 to 2013) is 2 to 3 years away from being rebuilt and reopened I took plenty of photos of the mezzanine closed off, the street entrances and the portion of the mezzanine that has been opened with the new connection between 1 train loop platform and the R train

Whitehall Street-(22 Photos) includes photos from December when only the middle track was in use and Downtown platform. Plus what I think is remains of salt on the track beds.

Enjoy this huge update of the destruction and reconstruction caused by Superstorm Sandy. (whose page I’ve also updated)

Don’t get to excited about this update (Well I do have plenty of photos). As I continue to dither about the best way to write Penn Station itself I managed to write the two subway stations that serve the surrounding area and all of the commuters beneath 7th Avenue and 8th Avenue. The exits are quite extensive (each station has six different turnstiles areas) and are also similar in terms of their unique layout of Platform-Local-Express-Platform-Express-Local-Platform only shared with the IRT station at Atlantic Avenue. This has both to do with limiting transfers at the stations but in my opinion this is also because the stops are just beneath the street to get above the Railroad Tracks that exist down beneath. There is no room for the intermediate mezzanines between street and platforms found at most train stations. Instead all entrances are either directly along the local platforms or down beneath, for those that provide access into Penn Station. The stations were also built after Pennsylvania Station opened using provisions that were part of the original design of the now demolished train station.

Here are the two stations, each with an additional artwork page, The original Penn Station and its still used Underground Platforms opened in 1910:
