The Ruby Junction/E 197th Avenue Station is quite literally split, with City Center-bound trains stopping in the median of Burnside Street and Gresham-bound trains stopping on an independent ROW that trains follow all the way to the terminus in Gresham. The platforms are offset so trains stop before passing through the intersection of 197 Avenue and Burnside Street where the tracks also curve and go across the eastbound lanes of Burnside Street. Just east of the station and after the grade crossing with 199th Avenue, the first and still in operation yard and maintenance facility exists for the MAX. This means the station is a common terminus of early morning/late evening yard put-ins and pull-outs.

The platforms themselves each begin with their rears at the intersection of Burnside Street and 197th Avenue. The City Center-bound platform has two small brick shelters, one in the middle, one at the opposite end and an additional pedestrian crossing across the westbound lanes of Burnside Street. The Gresham-bound platform has a pedestrian path along it with a chain-link fence separating the platform from the path. There are also just two small brick shelters along this canopy for waiting passengers.
