Essex Street station is located in Hackensack, NJ. The station platform is a simple single side platform on the single track Peak Direction Rush hour only Pascack Valley Line. The platform has no station house nor signs of a station house. The only waiting place is a glorified bus shelter. The platform is low-level like all Pascack Valley Line Stops (Secacus Jct. is the only exception), but does include a short high level platform for wheelchairs. Just north of the station the right of way enters the median of Railroad Avenue at a grade, with the directions of the street on either side of it. Local Residents to cross the street just run across the tracks. No fences are provided for this minimal service line.
