Braintree station has an island platform and is the southern terminus of this red line branch. Until 2007 the stop had an exit fare, arriving passengers had to pay again to exit and departing passengers had to pay double. Trains reverse before the station, making the platform have next train signs. From here two staircases and an elevator connect to a sunken fare control area just beneath the platform. Doors from here lead out to the bus and taxi loop with stairs up to the bridge over to the parking garage and walkway to the commuter rail station. Walkways continue to local streets, Union and Ivory, but these are mostly low-density strips but with some surrounding houses. The platforms have the truss type canopies holding up the canopy over the platform area (without support on the platform itself) and a taxi/bus loop.
In 2017 the former bridge to the parking garage and Commuter Rail Station was closed as part of a project to replace the parking garage elevators. These have been replaced by a crosswalk across the stations drop-off/pick-up loop and the entrance to the garage now looks modern. The walkway to Commuter Rail trains was also rebuilt and now follows the same grade-grade as the station's driveway.
