Montauk is the terminus of the Long Island Railroad and is by far the eastern most point on the LIRR and MTA rail system. It's a whopping 117 miles from Penn Station, if you were to go north to Connecticut you would be slightly farther east of New London. If Long Island wasn't an island Amtrak would definately operate service this far away, it's Hiawatha corridor (the shortest corridor service) from Chicago to Milwalkee is only 96 miles long. The terminal station itself has a small rail yard and a very long and narrow island platform that only has a ramp up to it at one end along the bumper blocks and is canopied for about three of the cars of a train. The platform is long enough to even have all telve cars of the longest C3 train, The Canonball Express (Friday afternoons year round, non-stop from Hunterspoint Avenue to Jamaica to West Hampton) platform, at most East End stations the platforms can maybe accomodate six cars.
