The Long Island Rail Road is the oldest railroad still operating under the same name and charter since it's founding in 1834. In 1965 it became the first publically owned and operated commuter railroad in the United States when it was purchased by the State of New York and placed under the new Metropolitan Commuter Transit Authority, which became the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in 1968 which operates this unique 24/7 on some branches Railroad to this day on 319 miles of track to 111 stations (all except 7 are photographed).
