West 4th Street is an example of how well planned the IND system was. I think it is the best designed non-cross platform transfer on the subway. There are two exits one at each end of the platform. The upper level is for the 8th Avenue Lines, the lower for the 6th Avenue Lines. On a 8th Avenue platform after walking down one of the many staircases you reach the transfer mezzanine. This mezzanine runs the length of the platforms, transfers can be made between all directions. Then you walk down another flight of stairs onto a 6th Avenue platform. There are also two up escalators (one in each direction) that bypass the mezzine. There are track connections just south of the station.
