Liberty State Park is the final station where both of the original main lines that serve Jersey City split off to there respective branches to West Side Avenue (still in Jersey City), and to 8th Street (originally only 34th Street when the system opened in 2000) in Bayonne. The station itself has two side platforms, both with shelters in the middle of them. There is a fence between the tracks (which is common at most side-platform rail stations on lines that use low-level platforms, but none of the other side platform stations in Jersey City has them) requiring people switching HBLR branches to use one of the crosswalks down the ramps at either end of the platforms. The Southbound platform isn't strictly defined, it is simple a side of the large plaza where connecting buses are and the parking lot is. The station is walking distance from the Liberty Science Center and also has a very large Paid Park and Ride Lot. Just south of the station is HBLR's Yard and maintenance facility.

The station has a Transit Arts Installation called Riding the Rails, 1999 by Arlene Slavin. It consist of Stainless Steel Paving Inserts, Ductile Iron Tree Grates, Carved Glass Blocks, and Cut Steel Plate Bench & Railing Inserts, this is all according to silver plaque that is directly underneath a golden one that was put up when the HBLR system's first portion opened (along with station) and says Liberty State Park Station, Dedicated April 15, 2000, and then has a list of the various elected officials at the time.
