47th is a stop located in the middle of the Dan Ryan Expressways. It has its exit at the southern end of the island platform. Here a narrow staircase followed by a narrow escalator, then the elevator leads up to the standard glass walled station house at street level. There are then the turnstiles and then the station house ends with doors a bit before 47th Street's overpass. A wide open air walkway must be used to actually reach the street. This is do to a slight curve in the ROW just before the station and only wanting to build a platform on a straight stretch of track. There is a covered walkway to the northside of 47th Street where the entrance is and then a covered crosswalk to the southside of the street for connecting buses.

This wide area outside of the station house must be crossed to reach the street, this is because the Dan Ryan is curving and the station was designed
