Winnetka (Elm Street) is the namesake and middle station of 3 in this Village. The station is located in a depressed trench that was built as part of a grade-separation project funded by the Works Progress Administration between 1937 and 1943. The station got a $4.9 million overall in 2009 using Recovery Act money which rebuilt the station, built new platform shelters, and installed elevators, making the station ADA compliant.

The current station consists of two side platforms in the open cut for the two track line, the Green Bay Trails uses the same open cut (there were once three tracks in this area, and is to the east, alongside the Inbound platform. These platforms run between the bridges of Elm Street and Oak Street, each of which has a staircase down to the station platforms. The Inbound platform has two, and the outbound platform 1, small brick waiting shelters with windscreened benches. Above the Outbound platform on the west side of the open-cut is a two-story, brick station house. The lower-story is made out of concrete and has C&NWRY ~ Winnetka engraved in the concrete. The brick station house contains a waiting room and ticket office open for one weekday morning shift, Next to the statin is a modern footbridge with elevators (in brick shafts) and a staircases down to each platform. This footbridge connects the station house in a plaza with some parking and Lincoln Avenue.
